What are the functions of a Restriction Orifice on the centifugal pump recycle line. What is the main difference between the restriction and the flow orifice? Is the beta ratio required to specify a RO? Thank you.

Pressure drop is a significant different between restriction and flow orifice data. Perhaps 100 inch water is common for liquid orifice drop and lower with vapors. If a pump raises 100 psig, the restriction orifice on the reccycle drops about the same. Plate should be thicker etc.
 
The RO on the pump recycle is sized to prevent fluid boiling in the pump. In my experience the size is usually specified by the mechanical engineer responsible for the pump. The pressure drop will be from the pump deadhead pressure to the line pressure after the orifice.
 
centrifugal pump need to keep a minimum recycle flow when the outlet is blocked or too low flow rate. it is to protect pump from vibration damage and motor damage. the restriction orifice is like a throttle valve, it produce a pressure drop. for large pumps we usually have a recyle control valve instead of a restriction orifice. I have seen a lot of recycle valve design but never see restriction orifice for recycle line without control valve (on/off). anybody a better view ?
