What are the options in different types of retaining structures for a ~2.5m high, ~20m long section of road that requires supporting. Gabions etc?

You need to first do some searching on your own. This is basic stuff. If you don't know about the multitude of available wall types, you shouldn't be designing a wall. In addition, you gave no information about the ground conditions or what you are trying to do.

I wouldn't start with gabions as they might be too flexible. MSE, concrete cantilever or counterfort, sheet pile, cribbing, piles and soil nails (and probably other types) can all be used to retain earth. Consider doing a search on this forum, especially in the geotechnical engineers - earth retention engineering and slope stability engineerig forums for many tips on the designs of retaining walls.
