Revisiting an old problem topic (Disappearing Patterns) 1

My search of the forum dug up a few closed threads regarding patterns with similar issues I'm facing, but none of the suggestions from those threads have fixed my problem.

We use patterns for title blocks, and once a pattern is retrieved and the associated part file is saved, the next time we call up that part, the pattern isn't there anymore.

The UGII_PATDIR variable in ugii_env.dat is correctly pointed to our designated patterns directory (and uncommented), and our pattern files were all saved with "Pattern Data Only" checked in the "File -> Options -> Save Options" menu.

We never had this problem when we were using NX3 (unix), but ever since we recently upgraded to NX5 (win) to stay on par with GM, the problem persists.

I've also noticed that even though the UGII_PATDIR variable is set to our designated patterns directory, when we choose "Format -> Pattern -> Retrieve Pattern", the default directory shows a subfolder buried in the GM Toolkit folder tree, not our user-created patterns folder. Could something in the GMToolkit be forcing this and/or causing our problem?

Is there anywhere in the Customer Defaults where this can be set?

Any other suggestions?

TIA

Try putting the environment variable in your personal profile (Windows) as that is supposed to override any which are set in other places.

Pardon my ignorance, John, but could you be more specific? Are you suggesting copying the ugii_env.dat file into my "C:\Documents & Settings\user" folder?

NO, he isn't!
He is suggesting that you right click on My Computer, Propertis, Advanced tab, Environment variables and create a User Environment variable UGII_PATDIR that points to where you have your formats.

To see if the GM Toolkit is changing things, open the ssylog and search for UGII_PATDIR and see where it is pointing.

Just a quick update on this issue - I had lost the patience (and quite frankly, the time) to investigate this any further after I started this thread, so I've been living with retrieving the pattern every time I opened UG. However, I finally went back and looked in the syslog as Ben suggested, and UGII_PATDIR is pointing to a directory that doesn't exist (despite my editing of of the ugii_env.dat file and also creating my own environment variable as John suggested). I'm not sure what's dictating this, but I suspect it's something with the GM Toolkit. Anyway, I created the directory that it's supposed to be looking for, dropped my pattern files in there, and voila, it's working now!

Yes, I suspect that the GM Toolkit is the culprit here. Note that setting it as I suggested, in your system profile, is fine if there is nothing else trying to overwrite it. As for env.dat, that sets the variables when NX is launched, but if NX is being lunched under the control of some other mechanism, then IT will have the final say if IT chooses to modify any variable settings.

Actually the GM Toolkit is heavily scripted and possibly expects to find a directory with the patterns installed in a specific location. I'm afraid you'll need to ask or analyse the installation if you wish to avoid further complicating things. If you are going to tinker with the best of intentions note carefully what you've done as there could be some unintended consequences.

Sorry to sound negative but it sounds like something is not installed right with the toolkit and I wouldn't wish to give you a bum steer by advising you blindly to do too much.

Best Regards
