RFID tags to track tools and holders.

Hi all,

Does anybody have any experience of using a system like RFID tags in order to track/keep stock inventory of backends and cutter bodies.
I've been asked to look into this but have not had any experience of it.
One thought was pull studs with RFID tags in, not sure if they exist though.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Not sure why - but RFID tags have not really caught on. Supposedly Walmart was going to make every vendor use them - like 5 years ago.

Probably cost and reliability came into play - just not sure why??

They work fine, but limited read range and risk of damage are issues. The non-rewritable ones are cheap.
I have seen tool chests with cameras integrated. Each drawer has cutouts for each tool. It takes a image when you open the drawer and when you close it. You use your ID badge to unlock it.
It know who took what and only let you out if you put something in the wrong place.

Air Force mechanics are required to replace EVERY tool EVERY day to their storage spot or otherwise write about a 10 page report of what happened to it.

Keeps multi-million jet engines from exploding over a $3 screwdriver!!

I've seen laser-etched barcodes and barcode scanners on tooling.
