Ride the fillet 2

I remember seeing somewhere in some reliable source mention of an allowable amount of "fillet ride" in a connection. I can't find this anywhere now, but I thought it was on the order of 1/16".

What I mean by this is how far onto the fillet is a bolt/nut allowed to be in a connection at the flange of a wide flange beam? Example: W18x50 beam with bolts at 3-1/2" gage - does a 1-1/4" bolt encroach too much on this fillet?

I've never seen a reference that allows the bolt head or nut to ride the fillet. Normally the bolt needs to sit flush in order to pull all plies together equally.

Riding the fillet is usually associated with clip angles or similar connections where the edge of the angle encroaches on the fillet. This can be found in AISC 13th edition page 10-7.

I think the 1-1/4" bolts are too big for 3-1/2" gage. The encroachment is easy to calculate.

I am revising the connection to smaller bolts, higher strength...

Thanks to both TONNT and CTW. This is exactly the reference I thinking about, but I incorrectly thought it applied to bolts.
