When you state that it will be 'purged' for Class I Div I does that mean the rated atmosphere is within the box? Or is the box located within the rated atmosphere?

You can use standard nipples if they are uninterupted with no fittings within the rated area. If you cross the rated boundary, you may need to install a seal fitting at the crossing.

Look at the Appleton electric website for fittings.
Good luck

Rigid steel conduit - there's only one thickness made in the US, AFAIK.

the inside of the control box will be purged. it is less costly to purge our control over the cost on enclosing everything in a exp proof box.

There are two main differences between electrical nipples and galvanized plumbing nipples.
One is that electrical nipples are approved and plumbing nipples are not.
The second reason has to do partly with the approval. Part of the approval for electrical nipples has to do with the inside finish and the amount of seam welding flash allowed.
They are the same dimensions and are physically interchangeable but an inspector may decline to accept an installation done with plumbing nipples.
