Ring type base plates for cantilevered tube columns

We do a lot of sign columns with ring type base plates fillet welded top and bottom to the outside of the tubular column with up to 52 bolts in a circular pattern and with gussets between each bolt. The base plate does not continue under the inside of the column.

Does anyone know of a good design reference for this type of connection?

Your question is similar to what was discussed in thread507-166295. I posted a link to a good design spec for monopole base plates and a link to some other interesting transmission tower info.

This is a very good link, but it doesnt cover gusset plates.

My concern is that the lateral component of the gusset plate load creates stresses in the wall of the tube which need to be accounted for.

If the connection was in pure tension then the top of the gusset plates would want to pull out and it would then become a ring tension.

But when you have some compression and some tension loads on the bolts, this is alot more complicated to understand how it works.
