Rivet Symbol Legend on older engineering drawings

Does anyone know the history/background on legacy aircraft drawings that have a "Rivet Symbol Legend" block on the upper right corner of the drawing title page? They show a basic circle, basic circle with a diagonal, etc. depending on the solid rivet head style and diameter.

Was there a code or standard associated with this format?

I'm aware of the current fastener code (NAS523.

i don't think there's a standard symbol

I suspect that each company had it's own way of coding fasteners, before NAS523 kicked-in and generally standardized coding across the industry [company exceptions still apply].

Can You show us an example of the code block you are looking at?
