Could someone tell me what "RMS" stands for as it applies to surface roughness.

RMS: Root Mean Square. This is one of the standard methods used to calculate surface roughness. RMS is measured in either micro-inches or micro-meters. A low measurement indicates a smooth, high-quality surface finish. Other methods of calculating surface roughness include Ra (Arithmetic Mean Roughness) and Rt (Maximum Peak-to-Valley Roughness Height).
