We are involved with a range of lateral support projects, which are generally related to warm weather conditions (Southern Africa).
We recently have been asked to work on a rock slope project in weather temperatures that do not get over the 0 to 2 degree Celcius mark in winter - in fact summer temperatures do not get over 15 degrees Celcius. We will be working during winter conditions unfortunately and I am concerned about the installation/effectiveness of rock bolts (typically 6 metres long) in terms of:
1) Temperature of the rock during installation
2) Type of rock anchorage grout to use in cold weather conditions
I am interested to know how other geotech guys working in the colder areas work in these weather conditions? Does one encase ourselves and continually heat the working area? or do we use specialised admixtures in cement grouts or focus on resin grouting? I would appreciate your comments/advice.
