Can someone tell me if it is possible to roll and weld a 24" OD tube with a 64mm wall thickness?

I need to supply/make a tube with these dimensions. I know that there may be circ welds as there are 24 metres of it, but I don't necessarily have to supply the tube in one length.

2 1/4 Cr Class 22 to ASTM A691 Welded EFW Pipe is my aim and I need 100% rad testing too, so all suggestions welcome on any variations/alternatives/equivalents or possible ways of achieving this.

Most gratefully grateful!

You may be limited by the radius of curvature and the equipment that steel fabricators have.

Best bet is to start calling the major fabrication workshops in your area.

Thank you dbuzz. I have done a little bit of research on this prior to the post, and 'major fabrication shops in my area' are now only limited to 'this side of the dark bit of planet pluto'. I am starting to lose the will to live with it! I am looking at all avenues - even (perhaps stupidly), forged, machined and circ welded rings, or what about bored bar - perhaps even extrusions!

Laugh away!

There isn't enough for a mill to produce this for me so I'm rocking in the hard place at the moment.

Any more fer any more?

Happy trails,

Unclesyd.

Cheers for that. What I know about casting you could scrawl on a bumble bees ass with a thick black pen! I don't know if I can use castings to be honest, you know - if there is an equivalent to the ASTM spec I need it to etc?!

I called them up and asked for advice. You probably know about castings, but as I understood them, the thicker the wall, the shorter the length - you have to compromise one or the other I guess. The job becomes a little more expensive when I have to include for a few more circ welds and radiography testing than I thought!

When they had all stopped rolling around the floor, one of them came up with the suggestion of pressing it as two 'shells' and welding it. I had already considered this and still have trouble finding someone to press the u's for me.

Keep at it guys, and thanks for the help so far!

ChelseaFC,

Just called in some 20 year old markers and made a phone call.

If a casting is suitable like I posted previously I think you should give Mr Charles Ricks (ACIPCO)a call @ US 1-800 326-7717; or a Fax: 1-205 325-8193. You could probably fax him and have him call you.

Your requirements for materials and dimesions are well within their range of capabilities.

Looking at the Grinell book your thickness is pretty close to sch 160 24" pipe. Maybe you could play with the type of material the pipe is made of to fall into the thickness catagorie of a sch 160 pipe.

You might want to post why you need a pipe like this. Maybe someone else has a different way to skin this cat.

Does that help at all?
