This has been brought up before on eng-tips, but nobody really answered it. The requirement in ISO 3471 has a table of Charpy v-notch tests that are required on the material, but it's vague about which test is required. There are two columns for temps, and a variety of test article sizes, but no indications as to why you would pick one size over another, nor if you have to meet one or both of the temp columns. Does anyone here have guidance?

10 x 10 mm is the preferred/standard size. If you're dealing with materials where you cannot get a 10x10 mm sized specimen from, you can go smaller.
There is a direct link between both columns, but if you fulfill one column, you generally also conform the other values. Impact tests are mostly done at either room temp, 0 or -20 degrees, so the -20°C column makes most sense. No, I cannot give you a source for this, this is my personal interpretation.
