Is there a limitation on the spacing of the vertical reinforcing around the perimeter of a round concrete column. With round ties, is it to be limited to 6" per ACI 318? Or do round ties let me go further than 6"?

I think you can go further than 6", but you have to have at least 8 bars (ACI 10.9.2)and you have to meet the 1% minimum. In 7.10.5.3 - the last sentence appears to imply that if you use circular ties, the 6" space limit doesn't apply.

Actually ACI 10.9.2 requires only 4 bars minimum for square or circular ties, and 6 bars minimum for spirals.

Aside from meeting the 1% min and 8% max steel area I don't think the vertical bar spacing matters for circular ties.

I think what JAE was implying is when 8 bars or more are provided you do not have to consider the bar placement when considering its moment strength.
