Running muliple STAR's bad idea? 1

Hi all,

when using cosmos it is possible to run multiple instances of STAR.exe(on different study's), but i'm not sure if this is realy such a good idea...
Not sure if there is potential for some sort of access violation or something similar.

Everything seems to be ok though.


Does anybody have any experience with this?

Are you running Cosmos/M or CosmosWorks?

Just off the top of my head, if you are running the analyses in separate files/folders there should be no interaction because the OS keeps the two processes separate.

If you eventually move to solidworks they have an option to run all studies.

Running all studies is not the same thing as running multiple instances of STAR. STAR is a solver that uses the files in particular folder(s) as input and output. STAR is capable of running different studies (boundary conditions, elements, types of run) in a single job. If you try running STAR on the same folder(s) simultaneously there is going to be a conflict because each one will be trying to change the same files. If STAR is run on different folders then there shouldn't be a conflict.

In SolidWorks you might also run into conflict with files in the temp folder if you try to run multiple instances of STAR.

Don't think the license will permit it in solidworks. I have tried using it on different parts but the simulation tools are only available to one part or assembly that is open. I run all studies in solidworks with different BC, element types, study types, with no conflict. Been a couple of years since I used COSMOS now so I am sure it would work differently, I was just responding to his original questions, "on different studies". So he may only want to run all studies, who knows. Does he want it on separate parts/assemblies or just different configurations of the same part?

I have verified that multiple STARs can be run using Geostar. There was no licensing issue. But you must work in two distinct folders.

It worked ok as long as i used separate directories (as already mentioned by other posters).
