Hello,

this is my first posting and I wanted to greet everyone before asking my question.

Now the other thing.
I was about to order a steel coil made out of 316Ti Material (S31635) using ASME SA-312. Unfortunately SA-312 does not list the Grade 316Ti in the requirement tables (just "...") even though the UNS designation and data is included.

May I order and use 316Ti (1.4573 in Germany) for ASME-Projects? (no U-Stamp req). Is there any explanation why there is "..." only? I couldn't find one.

Sorry for not knowing and thanks for any help!

BBSR71;
You are correct, there is no welded T- tube or P-pipe Grade for 316Ti listed in this material specification. Most likely reason is that this material does not come standard in TP product forms, as with other material Grades.

Pipe can be ordered as a UNS designation only under this ASTM/ASME specification. Yes, UNS material can be used for projects that do not require an ASME Code stamp.

Hello metengr,

thank you for the reply. So if I understand you correctly, I may order and use this material without any problems, as long as I place the order under the UNS designation?

The part lists for drawings and all documentation has to refer to UNS as well then?

Just being curious: should U-Stamp be an requirement, UNS for 316Ti would not be allowed, or did I just misread that?

Thanks again.

If U-stamping is required, this material under SA 312 is not permitted for use as pressure retaining material because there are no allowable stress values in ASME B&PV Code, Section II, Part D.

You can use SA 240 Grade 316Ti but only as plate, not as pipe (see Section II, Part D, table 1A).

Found it!

Thank you again sir.
Being german, getting into ASME specifications is sometimes not so easy at first.

On the other hand.. once you really start reading and get some help here and there, it all starts making sense.
