Why would SA-325 bolts be used for flanges (B16.5 or ASME Div 1 App 2)? I have seen this application a number of times. In fact, the "ASME Guidebook" by Farr and Jawad [ASME Press] has a hand-worked example using the old Taylor Forge bulletin flange worksheet that specifies SA-325 bolts.
In my previous existence as a structural engineer working with industrial structures these bolts were used all the time for standard structural connections; AISC-type work with beams and columns. The SA-325 spec indicates that it is identical to the ASTM A-325 spec, and states "the bolts are intended for use in structural connnections." To me it seems to be a misapplication to use these bolts for pressure vessel flanges.
Why would these be used for flanges?
TIA
