I have been asked to do some machining on SA516GR70 plate. I have never worked with this steel before and am wondering how it cuts. I understand that it is a pressure vessel plate and might behave like something like A36 but no one seems to be able to discuss how it cuts.

I appreciate any advise that can be provided.

Probably better than some lesser grades such as A-36 because of the higher quality of manufacture there are no raw hunks of engine block, etc left in the plate to wreck your drills. Been there, seen that. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. The HX mfgr who had that experience would often use 516-70 instead of A-36 just to save the havoc with the drills (they used multiple spindle tables.)
