Does anyone know if there was a material designated as
SA-7? I have a drawing from a customer from the early 1960's calling for SA-7. The rest of the fabrication is carbon steel.

Prior to ASTM/ASME A/SA-36 there was ASTM A-7, which is carbon steel used in structural applications (like bridges). I don't recall if the ASTM A-7 was endorsed by ASME Section II. If the drawing was generated by a B&PV Code shop, I would say that it probably was endorsed.

I can find out with my contacts at the National Board. In fact, they would have a copy of the specification if it existed. Do you want me to verify this information?

Thanks for the quick response. I have the customer working on this, but, I think based on your information and the fact that everything else on this channel is carbon steel, we can assume that SA516-70 will work for these partition plates.

The 1965 code book has an SA-7:
Min TS 60,000
Allowable 12,650 -20 to 650

Note (19): These allowable Stress values apply also to structural shapes and bars.
