I have a small oil reservoir drawing that my shop has started fabricating. The drawing calls for SA53/106B. I just received the MTR's on the pipe they started with and it says mfg in accordance with API 5L Gr B (2004). It is for a code (ASME) application and before I call my AI I would love to know where I stand. Any reason that can't work as long as composition and properties match up?

Thanks in advance for the help.

If this vessel is indeed a pressure vessel and must be stamped with the ASME B&PV Code U symbol with a completed data report, the API 5L Grade B material is not permitted for use (as pressure boundary material). The reason is because this material is not listed in Section II, part D for pressure retaining use. If you need trim material or material that is not considered pressure boundary application, you can use the API 5L Gr B material.

Thanks...I was sure hoping someone would have an out for me, but it doesn't look like it. I appreciate the help.

Often times the MTR will also state SA-53B S, SA-106 and API 5LB S. Did it? If not, you may be able to have it recertified by the manufacturer or by the veesel manufacturer per UG-10. Otherwise refer to metengr.
