Hi

I recently met a case, where for a Heat Exchanger, tubesheet is specified to be of SA965 Gr 316L. However, my suppliers intends (and infact has already procured) material with SA182 Gr 316L material. On comparing, I find that the material chemical composition and mechanical properties are all the same. The term "High Temperature" is used in the title of both specifications. Could someone throw some light over what is the basis difference in these two specifications and do I have a premise to reject SA182 Gr 316L material used by supplier instead of SA965 Gr 216 material? (the premise I am looking for here should be purely technical, no contractual).
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Regards
Shashank

The SA 182 material specification can be used tubesheets unless specified as forged, otherwise it is for piping components either rolled or forged plate. Tubesheets are usually supplied as forgings and not rolled plate.

The vast majority of tube sheets that I am familiar with (all 4" and thinner) are made from plate. This is especially true of the 1.5" ones that are 12' x 24' with no welds.

Thanks EdStainless. As far as my experience goes, most tubesheets have been forgings.

Thanks Metengr, however, an SA182 material can very well be "forged" upto a weight of 4540kgs as per standard. Hope you would not differ from this. In such a case, how do you conclude that if made to SA182, then the tubesheet would be rolled and not forged?
As for the case particular, the supplier is using forging made to SA182.
If you are right then the forging cannot be certified to SA182. If not, then principally there is no difference in materials of similar grades of SA965 AND SA182? Your reply would be appreciated.

What does the MTR state as forming for the SA 182? I have seen forged rolled plate supplied under SA 182. The rolled plate mentioned above I have seen on small heat exchangers and condenser tubesheets, low pressure equipment. Beyond that, most purchasers especially for use on feedwater heaters or high pressure service prefer forgings because of the consistent through thickness properties.

MTR clearly says forging .. I don't see any technical premise to reject this. It looks similar material with a different certification. That's all. Wat do you suggest Metengr?
Thanks in advance.
