Today, a group of us mourn the loss of a colleague who was killed in a collapsed trench excavation about a year ago. My point of posting this thread is not to divulge details about what happened, but rather to send a shock throughout the geotechnical engineering community. Please do not ask me for details about what happened, but please read this thread intently, and share this information with people you work with in order to prevent future accidents.
I'm sure many of you have had several near misses and may have a sense of invincibility that's hopefully, over time, been tempered by the sensibility of experience. Accidents happen when we become complacent and let our guard down, and this happens most often with younger engineers who have yet to experience a wakeup call that often comes in the form of a tragic accident. There are many hazards waiting to rob us of our lives and well being. We simply need to put these hazards first and foremost into our consideration before beginning the work day. Make this a priority for yourself and those that work for you.
If safety is a priority for you, those that work for you will fall in line, and will hopefully avoid any work related accidents.
