Safety factor for material handling 1

I need an appropriate safety factor for the design of a steel "basket" which will be used in a material handling application (lifting parts). My first thought was 4.0, but I have not been able to find a reference to back that up, even on OSHA's web site.<br>

I just came across your posting. I'm guessing that since it was in August you have come to some solution. I have a very similar job I'm working on and would be interested in hearing what you came up with. I spoke with OSHA and was informed that they had no design type codes and they would, in a case like this, defer to a construction standard like ANSI.<br>

1926.552(b)(8) requires material hoists to conform to ANSI A10.5-1969, Safety Requirements for Material Hoists. I have not read a copy of this, so I am not sure whether or not a factor of safety for the component you are designing is mentioned or not.
 
Has any one read ANSI A10.5-1969, Safety Requirements for Material Hoists. And if so does it specify minimum factors of safety for the hoist
 
I suggest to use a factor of 5 ie. 20% on the ultimate tensile strength, as suggested by CMAA (Crane Manufacturers Assoc. of America)Specification 70, as a general guideline.
