How about spelling out the percentages to see how they go over time? My story is an odd one given my other posting of retention strategies because the salaries have gone through the roof. My last three and a half years I've netted a compounded 92.6% increase!!

5% at 6 months
17% at 1 year
3% to 5% COLA's for several years
0% two very lean years (took a 20% cut for 3 of those months to not lose my job - salary restored after the 3 months)
25% first change of job at 8 1/2 years
6% the next year
6.6% the next
26% second job change
8.2% this past fall

changed from hourly to salary+benefits at end of first year - think it was equivalent pay.
changed jobs at end of 2nd year of working - 20%
2nd year to now (7th year - how did it get to be so long?!) - between 2 & 3% COLA
plus 6 or 7% increase mid way through 3rd or 4th year of working with promotion from "assistant engineer" to "engineer".

My starting salary I would say was average, or maybe just slightly above average for the area, and benefits are average.

after 6 months: 3% COLA after annual review
after 18 months: 3.5% COLA after annual review
after 24 months: 4% Promotion to Eng. II
after 27 months: 13% lateral shift and relocation to establish new office with a small group
after 29 months: 4% COLA after annual review
after 31 months: 5% for assuming PM responsibiliies

This summer will be 36 months since I graduated and began working in Engineering. I did graduate a bit latern than most. I am currently 30 yrs. old.

Assuming I get a COLA this winter, I will have capped my pay grade until I become an Eng. III (which requires at PE license), or else I assume the title of PM II. I will not be elligable to sit for the PE until the fall of 2008.

By comparison to many of my peers, I feel I'm a little ahead of the curve when I comes to getting raises. However, I feel that being a bit older/mature upon graduation has played a big part.
