Save a 2007 asm as 2006

Is there a way I can save an assembly in 2007 so that someone else that only has 2006 can open it up?

No SW is not Backwards compatiable... you will have to save it as a Parasolid is your only choice... It will be a dumb solid with no Feature manager tree, but they will be able to open it.

Yes, and no.

If you really need an assembly, you'll have to export each part as a parasolid (or some other neutral file), import each into 2006, and re-assemble.

If you just need a representation of the assembly, you can save the 2007 assembly as a 2007 part and then export this new part as a neutral file which can then be imported into 2006.

As far as getting native data back a release, you're SOL.

You won't have to export each file as a parasolid... You can save the assembly out as a parasolid and that will change each file to its own parasolid file... That saves you from having to do each one.

Sorry about posting a repeated question. I guess I didn't know the correct terminology for what I was trying to do, because nothing came up with my searches.

So if I save as a pro-e asm will that work better at importing into 2006 or is it the same as parasolids and the like?

The best format for exporting to previous SW versions is parasolid. It is the native format for SW. If the SW6 version has the Feature Recognition module, you will be able to use it to recognise all or most of the features, but they will not necessarily recreate the same feature history or even the same features as the SW07 version.

Saving as a Pro/E "asm" achieves a similar but a far less clean result.

Feature Recognition is fairly basic, however. If you're doing regular extrusions/cuts and not lofts/sweeps for more complex geometry you should be OK.

Parasolid is the way to go.
