You state that it "tries" to save write protected files... is it sucessful in doing so?

Maybe getting a message like: xxx.prt failed to save because file yyy.prt is read-only and cannot be saved.

No. It warns me that the file is write protected. I also get this when I try to close all. It alerts me that the template file has been modified and would I like to save it.
I'll attach a screen shot. Like I said, I didn't get this in NX6 which make me think it's a config. setting.

Previous response was to EWH.

Yes, Ben that is essentially what it says. I just loaded NX6 to confirm I don't get the warning. I guess what I'm asking is, is it possible change a setting so that it doesn't try to save the template when I attempt a save all?

Reading your image, you are at getting the work file saved. NX is warning that the template did not save as part of the Save All operation.
Could the templates have been modified in a prior version of NX, while NX6 is using default templates?

Are you just copying the templates for NX7 from the NX6 files? The files will need to be resaved in NX7. This would be why you see the error in NX7, but not NX6.

If the templates were openened by the system to create a setup or CAM objects (operations, tools), then you should not see this warning. I have seen this before, but it should not be there in the customer version.

I just tried 7.0.1.7 with no problem. Create a part, start manufacturing, create an operation, close all parts. Only the work part name is listed as not saved.

Does this happen with the out of the box templates? If so, please log a call with GTAC, so we can see if it's a known issue.

If you opened the templates with file open, then the message is correct.

Have you refiled the template parts in your current version? If you have not, then they are going through part conversion the first time thay are used in every session. That should not cause the warning, but it could. It's a good idea to refile them anyway.

Thanks Mark, I believe Ben got it.
I did not open them with file open.
They are modified templates that I had copied from the NX6 folder. I think its as you said, its as if the system is opening them for the first time every time. So I opened all of them in NX7 and saved them, and that seems to have done it.
