Being new to industrial computing, I hope some can advise me on configuration rather than board specifics.
An SBC, with PCIe edge-connector, and a multi-slot PCIe backplane: Is the computer limited in how many PCIe slots it can talk to ? What are the limiting factors for communication with the other interface boards that are plugged into the backplane ?

TIA

There is no real limitation. The lanes are negotiated during operation and can be distributed as needed.

The main limitation is that the backplane PCIe physical slots will need to physically accept the boards you want to install. If you have a bunch of short slots in the backplane and long cards you may have trouble plugging them in. Technically you should be able to put a long card in a short slot even, but it depends on the connectors used. It also depends on the card functions. While cards can negotiate a lower lane count then they desire the card could not perform as expected if it has been lane limited.
