In Section 16.3 of the third edition of the LRFD manual, AISC defines Sc as the 'elastic section modulus to the tip in compression relative to the axis of bending.' I'm not sure what this means and, as such, how to calculate this value. Any advice would be most welcomed.

In section 16.3 of the LRFD 3rd edition Sc refers to the section modulus with respect to the direction of bending. If you are looking at major axis bending it will be Sx, if you are looking at minor axis bending then it will be Sy. In reguards to LTB, Sc is always Sy, because it is the least section modulus.

Hope this helps.
