Anybody have access to a system that would scan the surface of a metal artifact (see image) and provide a 3D digital image? This artifact has been in the ocean since 1717 and is a little worn down. It's a plate with about a 12" diameter (30cm). The artifact can't be shipped but can be delivered within a 2-3 hour of Boston.

There are lots of 3D optical or laser profilometers that could get the surface profile. The optical profilometers probably have higher spatial resolution. Once you get the point cloud, you could probably filter out the extraneous features and get to embossed features. There may be other approaches such as used by dark-field microscopy or some sort of spectral approach

Destruct2021,

Try East Coast Metrology in Topsfield, MA. They can definitely handle it and seem to be close to you.
