A 20 ft thick layer of fill (SP material) has been placed in a ravine to level out a site
for construction. The contractor claims that the fill has been compacted to 95% of the modified
Proctor value but can produce no test results except for the top 5 ft. A borehole is drilled and
SPT tests are conducted using an automatic hammer delivering 80% of the theoretical energy.
At a depth of 15 ft, the blows count for each 6 inches of penetration are 3, 6, 6.
My question is, how would you estimate your qc given a grain size of 0.7mm?

For D50 = 0.7 mm , qc/N (qc in bars) is approximately 7 ( see Robertson, Campanella & Wightman, 1982 ). In you case qc should be around 0.8 MPa.
