When pumping 3% to 6% primary sludge with a plunger pump ( in this case an EMS VRH250
Hydraulic 240-500 lpm, 0-50 bar ) is it necessary to still consider scour velocity. We have 8 pump sets operating duty standby desludging 8 primary settlement tanks. We are having problems with blockages, mainly in the suction line and non return valve.
The flooded suction lines are 10m long 150mm diameter and the discharge main is 200mm diameter and 2km long. The pumps are delivering around 20m3/hr.
This flow will give a velocity of around 0.4m/s in the suction main and 0.2m/s in the discharge main. I've read that a velocity of 0.9m/s is required when pumping sludge, but because the suction and discharge pressure capabilities of the pump are good,is it still necessary to try and achieve 0.9m/s.
