When a screw pump, like one from PG Group, in a boat, loses suction on the oil/tar/pitch that it is pumping, would it pump (compress) air at any significant pressure? We think not, but would appreciate a second opinion. Thanks

No, as far as I remember they cannot compress gas to any significant pressure. But are you sure that your screw pump can run dry? Most of them can't (damages occur). Only some special screw pumps have a dry running capability.
