SE Reference Manual

I am going to be taking the SE and want to purchase the SE reference manual. There are already 7 editions published and the newest is $250-$300. Was hoping to buy the 6th edition for half the price, but there is no information regarding what codes are included in which edition. I am taking SE in October of 2014. Anyone who knows if the 6th edition has the same corresponding codes as the 2014 Oct exam?

The 6th Edition will have the codes that pertain to the October 2014 Exam. From what I've seen and heard, this will be the last exam given based off of the codes referenced in the 6th edition of the SERM. Spring 2015 is when NCEES will begin referencing new Building Codes and the 6th Edition of the SERM will then be out of date.

What brut3 said. Taking lateral this October as well. Let's hope we pass so we don't have to rebuy any reference material.

One item to note is the NCEES sample exam is actually based off of older codes than the test. I've found a few minor errors this causes but if you're aware of it then it's still a very good reference for the exam.

Where have you seen that the 2015 test will involve new codes? While I assume it is coming, I have not read anything yet at this point to indicate that is the case.

I believe brut3 is also assuming that as well. The bridge spec used was updated in April to the latest AASHTO spec (excepting interim revisions). I would imagine that this year we will see the building codes updated as well. There was a post on the engineerboards.com forum from the guys who author the SE reference manual and they also seemed to assume a code change was coming.

However, I do find it interesting that they just released the 7th edition of the SE reference manual and it was only updated to the october exam standards.

I really wish NCEES would let people know. That would suck to buy all these out of date codes only to be told you have to buy another set 6 months from now.

I believe that I saw an article in a magazine somewhere that validated my assumption. I'll try to find the article again and will re post later.

I realize that the memo from NCEES is a little vague as to what the design standards actually are, but I assumed we would be tested on current design standards beginning Spring 2015.
