Greetings! I have a question pertaining to welding of materials listed in ASME Section II part D. Specifically, bar stock of SA 564 type 630 (S17400) is listed with a W1 note, which indicated that this material is not for welded construction.
However, I wish to use this material in a design where none of the design loads will be taken up by the weld. The catch is that I want to put in a non-structural seal weld in lieu of a gasket.
Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Is this something that is likely to be allowed when designing to Section Viii Div 1?
Thanks!

Thanks Mike,
UW-5(b)seems to deal with non-pressure parts being structurally welded to a pressure vessel. I would not consider a seal weld to be a structural weld necessarily, since in its absence the vessel will still not fail structurally, and may not even leak. I am curious as to whether using a small seal weld as a gasket with a material that has a W1 non-welded construction note will result in the material being considered unacceptable for use.
Thanks again!

ktgottfr, I don't see the word structural in there anywhere.

If welds are made on the pressure boundary it must be shown to be a weldable material.

The words "proven of weldable quality" show up over and over.

Regards,

Mike

In my experience, there's no such thing as a 'non-load carrying weld'.
