Search directories: except for... 1

I am using the search directories option to load a few assemblies that I have. There are a few large subdirectories within the folder that I want to search that I know will NOT contain any needed files. Is there any way to exclude these from the search?

You're working in native I take that as given. I would move the subsection of directories from under the searched path. Otherwise the only way is to specify what you do want to search at length.

If you are using versioning rules then due to the way the matching criteria are applied it is necessary to structure your searched directories carefully. In this case less is more. What occurs is that the search is applied from the top directory down through the sub directories like roots of a tree in alphabetical order. BUT the first possible version match in the highest directory is taken and accepted. So if you have a later version in a lower directory then it won't get found, unless you tell the system to search that directory first.

Thanks for the response. I was hoping there was some little trick that I didn't know about. I'll have to ask our IT about doing a little restructuring.

Yes. keep those directory structures simple especially if you're using versioning rules.

I have worked in places where people set up their directories on a project basis without even separating CAD data from timing charts spreadsheets PDF's and all sorts of other documents. After a while is sure is hard to find anything let alone manage to keep tabs on doing things in a properly organized way. Anarchy is its own reward!

I think I found the trick I was looking for: capitalize the directory name(s) that you don't want to search. For some reason it won't search in directories that have capital letters (UG NX2, newer versions may be different).

Either that or it searches lowercase first and uppercase second. This sounds like a good little trick, I'll have a look about and see what I can find out.

What I would do is create a file one and only one version, Save it in a capitalized named directory, and then add it to an assembly. Save that and by getting into and out of NX you could test whether it finds the file.

Also I'd like to know whether you're saving locally or on a networked server, and if the latter then what type of server, networking do you have in place.

Your approach wouldn't work in some cases for instance here we have a networked server that won't allow capitals in any file name.

If capitalized directories are not being searched, I'm guessing this is because of the "ugii_option" variable being set to "lower".

It's still available in later versions of NX also.

@hudson: I did a test before I posted and it works as I described. We are using native and not using versioning rules. I don't know a lot of detail on our server and network setup.

@phillpd: You are absolutely correct! I double checked and that option is set to 'lower'. I did not know that even existed. Thanks, you have solved a small mystery for me.
