Seawater Pumping

Ladies and Gentlemen,
is there any concern on seawater pumping with positive displacement pumps like piston or diaphragm type pumps? I am interested in the seawater effects that drive the corrosion of the material (oxygen, biomaterial). Are there other and are there any preventive means to reduces these effects?

The primary concerns that I have experienced have to do with selecting the proper materials of construction for the seawater itself, i.e. corrosion due to the chlorides and electrolysis (particularly the presence of dissimilar metals). Any manufacturer with experience in the application should be able to offer some recommendations. Typically, naval bronzes and Hastelloy or other alloys are offered, although I have seen cast iron used with some success. Electrolysis can be dealt with through careful material selection and design of the system to reduce or eliminate the effect. Sacrificial anodes are often used. I am not aware of any corrosive effects due to biomaterial.
