My question is in regards to pipe welds inspected under the requirements of ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1 and the NBIC.
My customer tells me that a pipe weld made by our contractor has exceeded the amount of reinforcement on the ID of the pipe aloud by code (a heavy root). I asked him how he measured it seeing how it’s about 3’ down a 6” piece of pipe and got no reply. It looks like its maybe an 1/8” to 3/16” above the pipe surface. I cannot find this requirement in the above mentioned codes. The 6” pipe makes up and outlet dump nozzle on the bottom of an Anhydride reactor. The reactor was built to Sec. VIII Div. 1 and we are repairing it in accordance with the NBIC. What is an acceptable amount of reinforcement aloud at the root area of a pipe weld under the listed codes? As well, what par or section is this information located. Thank You.

It's in UW-35

What's your wall thickness? Assuming schedule 40 or 80, your maximum reinforcement is 5/32" on a butt weld. So yeah, 1/8" to 3/16" is pushing it.

Three feet is within arm's reach, give or take some makeshift tools. Not so hard to measure.

Pipe wall is Sch. 80. UW 35 is very clear. Thanks!
