Where are allowable bolt stress values found for Section 1 equipment?

Table 3 of Section II does not appear to include Section 1 equip.

Here is my take on your specific question - the fabrication of pressure retaining items for boilers typically deals with welded construction, with only riveted construction prior to the 1940's (approximate). Bolting used in flanges or for internal hardware in boiler drums, etc would be furnished under misc items that the design engineer would specify. Flanges for use on boiler external piping and hardware would be supplied under ASME B16.5 with bolting requirements under Power Piping Code, ASME B31.1.

I am attempting a boiler repair requiring bolts holding together a category H fitting designed to Section I.

What is the service temperature of the bolts that are securing the fitting?

Whenever I hear questions regarding Section I Boilers and Bolting I can't help remembering the USS Iwo Jima accident in October 1990 regarding incorrect fasteners (nuts) on bolting.
Here is link to an article that was reprinted with permission of The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors BULLETIN, [Summer 1997).

ASME SA 193 Grade B16 studs should be acceptable.

B7/B16 will do fine under section 8, but that is not the question here.

Yor answer will not be "cut and dried" See the "Introduction" in SecI. The answer metengr has given you would be acceptable in my book.

rickylee,
Does this interpretation help explain what deanc and metengr are trying to say? Just remember that the tables in PG-23.1 were moved to Section II Part D

Interpretation: I-77-14
Subject: Section I, Use of SA-193, SA-194, and SA-479
Date Issued: April 25, 1977
File Number: BC-75-417

Question: May SA-193 Bolting, SA-194 Nuts, and SA-479 Bars and Shapes be used in Section I construction? They are listed in Section II but do not appear in Section I paragraphs concerning allowable materials?

Reply: Bolting and nuts for bolts are not provided for specifically in Section I; i.e., they are not included in the stress Table PG-23.1. SA-193 Bolting and SA-194 Nuts meet the intent of Section I wherein it is provided in the Preamble that where complete details are not given, it is intended that the Manufacturer, subject to the approval of the Authorized Inspector, shall provide details of design and construction which will be as safe as otherwise provided by the rules in the Code.
