I think this is really not an issue but a small dispute between some co-workers.
First off, when you have only one section view on a drawing with a section line displayed in the main view, must a section view label (i.e. SECTION A-A) be applied or is it okay to omit the label because of only one section view?
Secondly, If you have a section view on a drawing, is it always required to have a section line in the main view or is it in any situation, assumed and okay to leave off? Any proof of support would be greatly appreciated.

1) As far as I can determine per ASME Y14.3M-1994, if the cutting plane line is shown, the section identifier shall also be shown.
2) ASME Y14.3M-1994, para 3.2 "The cutting plane may be omitted when its location is obvious..."

I always indicate what the section view is referencing, regardless of quantity of views. If you had one without a 'title', then added another section view, the next rev should indicate that you added a section title to the previous view...a waste of time and space IMO.

The following are basic Y14 standards. Your company should have copies of these:
ASME Y14.1- Drawing sheet size and format
ASME Y14.1M- metric sheet size and format
ASME Y14.100- Engineering drawing and practices
ASME Y14.2- Line conventions and lettering
ASME Y14.3- Multi-view and sectional view drawings
ASME Y14.4- Pictorial drawings
ASME Y14.5- Dimensioning and Tolerancing
ASME Y14.24- Types and applications of Engineering drawings
ASME Y14.34- Associated lists
ASME Y14.35- Drawing revisions
ASME Y14.38- Abbreviations
ASME Y14.41- Digital product definition drawing practices
ASME Y14.42- Electronic approval systems

Have you read faq731-376 to make the best use of these Forums?

Thank you all for the quick responses. I will notify my co-workers of the conclusions.

Different perspective, but with my CAD package and how it's set up by default, it would take extra effort not to put the identifiers or show the section line.

In practice my understanding of the standard is the same as ewh states.

Posting guidelines faq731-376 (probably not aimed specifically at you)
