I have a copy of the Pressure Vessel Handbook, but I'm always looking for more detail. What I could really use would be a combination design guide/interpretation (not official ASME versions)/explanation of motivation for Section VIII. I could also use one for Sections I and IV, but not nearly as much.

Can anyone make any suggestions? I'm sure those experienced in the field have helped me along the way, and may be familiar with some of the questions I have regarding Section VIII. For example:

I apologize if this question might be presented in the FAQ or something similar.

I know you said non-official ASME books... But I'll recommend one anyway. See if you can find Volume 2 of the Companion Guide to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. It covers Section I and VIII. Its on the third edition now, you might find a second edition for only three figures... Volume 1 for Section IV.

I have a set of the second edition in my office - it "migrated" there after I put the third edition into the library. Don't read it as often as I should. Funniest part is the photos of some of the contributors. I know some - and the photos must have been taken 20 years ago!

Thanks, jte & metengr. I'm not opposed to ASME publications, they just tend to be expensive. I'm looking for bang-for-the-buck.

You already have the best 'bang for the buck' there is: PV Handbook. It goes downhill from there.

Okay. That's good to know, Duwe6: that the PV HB is the top of the heap. That's a bit of a shame for those of us interested in the more technical aspects of the code. PV HB is nearly void of any technical justification.

It sounds to me that, judging by title only, jte's suggestion is most in line with what I'm after. I guess I just have to justify to myself exactly how valuable this information is.
