I am designing a large opening in a large vessel. The design requires App. 1-7(b) calculations. The opening passes reinforcement calculations easily. It is failing 1-7(b) though. The use of a pad is not available but gussets can be used. Dos anyone know how to take advantage of the added stiffness that the gussets will provide when looking at 1-7(b)? If not, does anyone know of an accepted method to be used in lieu of 1-7(b)?

You can't take advantage of the gussets but you can for a flange per Fig 1-7-2, if you have one. Why can't you add a pad?

Their are several issues but what it really comes down to is it is not a point of flexibility with the customer. But never the less, the calculation has to be met somehow. Thanks for your reply.

If your customer doesn't like pads you can use an insert plate in the shell (locally thickened portion). This is very common to satisfy integral reinforcement.

Or try increasing the thickness of the neck. This will give you the most bang for the buck since it will increase the moment of inertia more readily.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I will incorporate this.
