Hey Guys,

Are industrial automatic entrance (security) gates typically operated with a 120VAC or a 24VDC gate motor? What's the typical motor HP, in the range of ~ 3 HP?

Thank you for shared knowledge.

Thanks,
EE

Probably more like 1/3-1/2hp as they are geared wayyyyyyyy down and need to not easily crush people. Usually about 300W or less. 12A @ 24V or 2.4A @ 120V

I had a couple of installs of rolling gates that were very heavy.
1/2 HP operators were ordered, 1/3 HP operators were delivered.
The 1/3 HP motors would not overcome the sticktion and could not start the gates moving.
If the gates were given help starting, the motors could move them.
The options were to make the 1/3 HP operators work or abandon them and reorder and hope to receive the correct hardware.
There was no guarantee of that.
With nothing to lose, I doubled up on the starting capacitors of the capacitor start motors.
The two gates and operators have been working well for over 15 years.

DC: As far as I know, less HP but much slower. The advantage of battery backup.

waross, that's probably why the gates I've seen have slack in the chain drive; give it a bit of a running start to break any ice or snow build-up.

You may be right, Dave.
I had two gates passing each other. The drives were mounted upside down on a concrete ceiling.
The chains had to be tight.
Slack was not an option.
This was not your standard install.

We just finished check out of the security gate at a large substation in cold climate. In addition to the various sensors and security features, the "apron" under the gate has embedded heat trace to melt the snow / ice.
