Seeking Infrared Controller

Can anyone point me in a direction to an Infrared Transmitter / Receiver controller? I need the ability to send and receive analog and discrete signals between a handheld and the control. Specifically, I would like to send a position value via Infrared and communicate via RS-485 to a PLC.

I would search for IR rs232 for results. then convert rs232 to rs485.

Thanks Macbeth. I have been to the IRDA site before. However, I'm looking for a pre-packaged, industrial grade solution. IRDA appears to relate more to the component level. The Xantech link does present some good ideas.
