I'm designing a bin (or hopper or bunker, whatever you want to call it) on top of a braced frame tower. I know how to design the tower for UBC. However I may do a simplified design or a finite element analysis of the bin itself.

I have rock inside a rectangular bin. Does anyone know of a reference to calculate the loads on the side walls?

BCSA publication titled "Theory and Practical Design of Bunkers" is a good reference for aggregate processing and mining applications. You may want to check or contact British Constructional Steelwork Assn. Also, Structural Engineering Handbook by Gaylord and Gaylord - a must desk reference for structural engineers also has a chapter for storage bins and hoppers.

Gaylord and Gaylord also published a separate book on bin and hopper design. I think Steel Plate Fabricators Ass'n has a John Buzek book on the topic as well.

Sorry, I meant to say that I need to know how to calculate SEISMIC loads on the sides of the walls. Based on a zone 3, using UBC 1997 (I know it's old), how do I calculate loads on walls for seismic conditions.
