Seismic Design of Nonstructural Components

ASCE 7-10 13.14.4 states a list of exemptions for nonstructural components. Item 5 states "Mech and Elec components in SDC C with Ip =1".

Does that mean that the component is exempt, or that the component, supports, and attachments are exempt?

I have a product conveyor (carbonated beverage ) in a SDC C location suspended from the roof (hanging down 15 feet or so). Do I need seismic restraints per the Code?

How about 13.1.4.1

Chapter 13 is the seismic design criteria for nonstructural components that are permanently attached to structures and for their supports and attachments.

If you are in SDC with IP of 1.0 its saying that the component does not require additional seismic design requirements (and seismic supports).

The code (Section 13.1.4) is basically recognizing that for low seismic hazards traditional supports and bracing are sufficient for seismic protection and the risk of failure is not an issue (not required to function after an earthquake. Thats why no additional seismic design of nonstrucutral requirements is required.

BUT: I'm not sure if your conveyor fits in the definition of Electrical and Mechanical Components. Look at table 13.6-1, Its your call but conveyors are listed under distribution systems. I'd look more at section 13.6 to see if additional requirements apply for process conveyors




Review section and make sure you dont bust out as a non-buidling structure.

Thank you for your response JGard.
13.6.11 Covers Conveyor systems. However, it references "conveyor systems, not designed and constructed in accordance with the reference documents in chapter 23...."
I am not sure what to make of that statement.
However, C13.1.4 Exemptions states the following; "Several classes of nonstructural components are exempted from the requirements of Chapter 13."
To me that statement clearly means that the if the component meets the criteria for the exemptions, they are exempted from Ch. 13 in its entirety.

Re-reading with a fresh set of eyes..Given the title of 13.6 is "Mechanical and Electrical Components" which covers all of these non-structural components. I agree with your interpretation that it meets the intent of 13.1.4, and you do not need to provide design per chapter 13
