I wanted to see how many people here just use the ASCE permitted approximate period for Cs derivation in lieu of using a software calculated period. I’m interested in high rise structures and for cases where the approximate period gives less base shear than the calculated period. However it still meets the Code requirements.

My points are ,

- The use of ASCE permitted approximate period for Cs derivation is compulsory requirement and used in computing the seismic base shear when the (ELF) method of analysis . This is required also for scaling the results of a modal response spectrum .

- The base shear calculated with ELF with approximate period is threshold value and may be less than the base shear with calculated period.

I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure..It is: Try to please everybody.
