Selecting all assembly instances of a part

Hi, first post, go easy!

I am a NX5 user migrated over from Ideas. I am trying to select all instances of a part in an assembly at once, in order to suppress them in an arrangement. The parts in this case are buried in multiple instances of the same sub-assemblies.

I know I could do this in Ideas so asume there must be similar functuality in NX, but I haven't appeared to have found it yet.

Can anyone help please?

In the Assembly navigator, pack your components. You can then select all instances of the component in question with one pick.

Make sure that the 'Name Selection' item is available in the Selection Bar and just type the name of the component and hit return and all instances of that component will be selected and you can then perform whatever operation you desire, such as Hide, Move to another Layer, edit the Color, Delete, etc.

Or you could pick your operation first, such as Hide, and then enter the Name of the Component in the Name field in the 'Other Selection Methods' section of the Class Selection dialog.

With the packing function, as far as I can work out, if you pack multiple instances of a sub-assy it doesn't pack the parts within it. Maybe there is a switch somewhere to toggle this on.

Using the 'name selection' works in some cases, I should have remembered that method because it is the same way I have hidden parts in drawing views. However because I have recently added to the assy, I now have the same parts that are also in unidentical sub-assys, and it gives me this error when I try to supress them all.

MULTIPLE COMPONENTS CAN ONLY BE EDITED WHEN THEY ARE CHILDREN OF THE SAME OCCURANCE OF THE PARENT PART

I understand what it is telling me but I cant see the logic behind the sofware acting in this way.

Ironically the 'supress component' command works fine but this is not the same as the 'edit suppression state' command, which is arrangement specific.

When you consider what Arrangement Specific Suppression does, there should be no wonder at the logic of only being able to handle components with a common assembly structure.
