Selecting / Sizing Temperature Element 1

An expression I use frequently is "they don't know they don't know"...so how can they know what questions to pose? I too am in this category on some things (spouse will say "many"), but I have to purchase a temperature element that will be used with a PLC to determine when to open/close valves for hot water circulation. The vessel is jacketed, and the product temperature is what will be measured.

I'm thinking a thermowell in the vessel bottom head would do the job...what size nozzle would I have to install in the bottom head, what would be the size of the thermowell and what would the instrument be? Temperature of product will be, hopefully, held to 45 C +/- 5 C.

Again, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

Look at

They have a bunch of thermowell options to choose from. I personally prefer the ones that are welded into the body of the vessel but that is not always an option. I also prefer 1/4" three wire 100 ohm RTD's over Thermocouples to actually measure the temperature. They cost about four times what a thermocouple costs ($125) but the accuracy is better. I personally think the life expectancy of both are poor. (1-3 years many times)
