selection set SS command in Civil 3D 2009

i am used to using the "SS" selection set command in land desktop for years now. the window looks like the picture i have attached. when i try the same command in civil 3D, it gives me the following message:
"SS must be called from within another command"
any ideas how i can get it to work?

i am not familar with Civil 3D, but it looks like a conflict in the *.pgp. Are you using the *.pgp and another civil.pgp for the aliases names?
