Hi
I am simulating the effect of axial load on a square hollow steel tube. The problem comes up when the tube start folding to itself. I defined a double side surface which is the tube and using self contact as follow:

*Surface Interaction, name=Seft
1.,
*Friction, slip tolerance=0.005
0.1,
** Interaction: Int-2
*Contact Pair, interaction=Seft
Tube,

This doesn’t work with Static, Riks Standard, however it s working just fine with Explicit. Are there any reason Abaqus is set up to solve self contact problem with Explicit only? My problem is dealing with static load only.
Highly appreciate for all helps with my problem.

I was lloking at a simlar problem atm.

It is nice that you tell me that the problem can be sloved in Explicit as I tried using Static, Riks Standard and failed.

did you managed to get the tube buckle without the contact?

Hi Yoman
i didnt have any problem with buckling analysis actually.

That intresting. did you use the Riks method? Did your model includes the tube with plasticity (perfetly plastic or with hardening modelled?

For the material properties, I put yield stress and strain value from tensile coupon test.
I did use Riks Static , however it stopped when self contact starting to occur. Then, I modified a bit using Dynamic, Explicit and it works.
