Sensor for clearance measurement

Hi,
I am looking for a sensor to determine the clearance between two surfaces.Based on the clearance value the component may be accepted or rejected.

Specify range of measurement, resolution of measurement, and physical arrangement needed to get any useful answers. Some options to research: digital or analog output proximity sensors, various types of photoelectric sensors, sophisticated laser displacement sensors, analog LVDT touch probes.
